When foreign members of the press talk about Icelandic music, glaciers are often brought into th’ mix for some reason. The music is glacial, mountainous, influenced by northern lights and northern winds, frozen tundra and some of the most beautiful waterfalls this side of the Atlantic. Elves dance as colourful leaves blow through, nature inspires within Icelanders a purity and innocence that enables them to express the whole of the emotional spectrum with a jagged pointedness and childlike innocence that leaves no one untouched.
The music of AMFJ is neither glacial nor mountainous. It was not written under a glacier, but it could bring to mind how it is to be stuck under one – between narrow mountains, creeping snowstorms, murky waters, incomprehensible interest rates and wage-slavery. It is the searing pain in the eye of the teenager that looks his suited father in the face and realizes that there is no hope – nothing is coming this way.
