The band Hjálmar is something of a cultural phenomenon in Iceland. It mixes reggae with Icelandic musical roots, a musical path no one in Iceland had dared to go when the band was formed six years ago. Hjálmar’s fourth album, being released now in September, has been awaited with much excitement. It was recorded partly in Tuff Gong and Harry J studio in Jamaica where Hjálmar teamed up with local reggae legends who all make their mark on the album. Previously the band has released three albums and received gold record awards for each of them, as well as number of Iceland Music Awards and nominations. In the summer 2008 the band released the song “Dom hinner aldrig ikapp” together with the Swedish rapper and hip hop artist Timbuktu. The song hit the charts in Iceland and many are excited to see if something more will come out of this unexpected artistic cooperation. Hjálmar are known for their extremely tight, energetic and colourful live performances, so be sure not to miss out on their concert!
